A quality professional proofread is highly recommended for a truly professional-looking book. Using the terms set by the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, an expert proofreader will

• Check pages after they laid out word for word against final, author-approved manuscript to ensure that the conversion of electronic files is accurate.
  
• Correct minor, outstanding spelling errors.
  
• Ensure that end-of-line hyphenation, especially in proper names and foreign terms, is handled according to standard publishing conventions set forth by Chicago Manual of Style, 15e.
  
• Confirm that typeface and font are displayed accurately. Including the following elements:
  
  • Italic, boldface, small capitals, or any font different from the regular text
    
  • All heads and subheads
    
  • All set-off material (excerpts, poetry, equations, etc)
    
  • Any other errors resulting from the conversion of electronic files.
    
• Review page numbers, running heads, and running feet for consistent accuracy.
  
• Verify that all illustrations and tables appear in the right location in the text.
  
• Query whether permission for qualifying material has been granted. If this is not done at this stage, material may have to be dropped or replaced by the author.
  
• Check each page spread for length, vertical spacing, widows (a very short line at the top of a page), and orphans (a single word or part of a word at the end of a paragraph).
